I have to say that before going to this show I had been told, in a second-hand manner, that this show sucked. My wife teaches Pitt Community College and she has a student who apparently drove all the way to Boston to see the show, and she said that it sucked. Now, she didn't give any particulars as to how it sucked, just that it did suck. So, while I wasn't about to take this unknown person's word for it, I was more than a little curious to see if U2, had for some reason, joined the legions of suckdom that so pervade all that exists in pop culture today.
Well, after seeing them I can honestly say that I don't know what the hell the said person was talking about. The only thing that I can think of is that this person disagreed with Bono's politics, maybe. But then why drive all the way to friggin' Boston to see them. Did they really not know that Bono was a lefty liberal? Under what rock have they been living for the last 20 years?!
Maybe it was Bono's voice? While I thought he did a great job adapting his now 50+ voice to songs written when he was in his prime, maybe this person thinks that fifty year old rocker should be able to perform for two hours like he did when he was 30. Honestly, I was more than impressed by the way he re-crafted some melodies and half spoke sang others so that he COULD hit some of those higher notes all the way to the final encore. Very impressive.
And the stage show was INCREDIBLE!!! If you still have a shot a tickets to this tour I would advise you to do so. That is, if liberal politics and old vocalists don't turn you off too much!
